Article: The $192 million Geraldton Health Campus redevelopment has reached practical completion, marking a major upgrade for health services in the Mid West and one of the region’s biggest hospital investments in more than 20 years. The first services, including the Emergency Department and Community Mental Health, are due to welcome patients from August, with more services to follow from September.
The upgrade is designed to reduce the need for patients to travel to Perth for treatment by expanding capacity and adding new clinical spaces. The completed works include an expanded Emergency Department, an integrated mental health service, enhanced safety features and modern infrastructure upgrades across the campus.
Works are still continuing on a standalone radiation oncology unit, which will be the first cancer treatment service of its kind in the Mid West. That unit is jointly funded by the WA and Commonwealth governments and is expected to be completed next year.
Premier Roger Cook said the project was “a significant milestone for Geraldton and the Mid West,” adding that it will deliver “a modern, first-class health facility that will serve the community for decades to come.” He said the government’s aim is to ensure people in regional WA can access care closer to home.
Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey said the redevelopment delivers expanded emergency care, improved mental health care and new ICU capacity, describing it as part of “the largest investment in health infrastructure in our State’s history.” Health Minister Meredith Hammat said the hospital is “what delivering for regional Western Australia looks like,” while Mid West Minister Jackie Jarvis said the project delivers “better healthcare and more local jobs.”
Local Labor MP Sandra Carr said the expansion of the ED, new ICU capacity and a dedicated mental health unit will significantly improve healthcare for the community. She also pointed to the radiation oncology unit and expanded renal service as further signs of long-term investment in Geraldton’s health system.
The government said more than $19 million in contracts have been awarded to Mid West businesses for the main works, supporting local jobs and regional industry. It also framed the project as part of a broader $5.5 billion health infrastructure program across Western Australia, including upgrades in Albany, Bunbury, Tom Price and Meekatharra.
