Montague Hillary Park playspace opens in Leeming as Perth playground upgrades expand
Montague Hillary Park’s new nature playspace has opened in Leeming as the Cook Government delivers $490,000 in playground upgrades across Perth.

Montague Hillary Park’s new playspace has officially opened in Leeming, marking the delivery of a 2025 Cook Labor Government election commitment aimed at creating more inclusive communities across Western Australia.
The project is one of five playground upgrades across Perth supported by a combined $490,000 in funding. The City of Melville received $100,000 to upgrade the Montague Hillary Park playground, add new nature-play facilities and install additional seating and greenery.
The redevelopment was shaped by community consultation, including input from students at a nearby primary school. The consultation helped guide the design of the new playground and nature-play area to better reflect the needs of local children and families.
Western Australia’s Local Government Minister Hannah Beazley said the State Government was committed to creating more inclusive communities and that investment in playground facilities was helping bring that vision to life.
“The Montague Hillary Park playspace is a great example of what can be achieved when State and local governments work together with the community,” Ms Beazley said.
She said Montague Hillary Park was one of five projects funded through the commitment and thanked the participating local governments for helping deliver the upgrades.
Jandakot MLA Stephen Pratt said the new playspace offered “fantastic facilities” for the local community. He welcomed the City of Melville’s decision to consult local primary school students during the design process, saying the approach helped ensure the playground and nature-play area met the needs of children and families.
The Montague Hillary Park opening follows the launch of Esplanade Park in Mount Pleasant in May. That project transformed a former parking lot into a new public park featuring mature trees and a modern play structure. It received $150,000 through a Cook Government election commitment and $465,852 from Lotterywest.
Further playground improvements have also been delivered or are nearing completion in the cities of Kwinana, Joondalup and Canning.
In Wellard, the City of Kwinana completed $90,000 in upgrades at Sunrise Estate Playground. The works included a multi-play unit with a climbing net to encourage active play, shade sails and a new footpath linking the playground with the picnic and barbecue area to improve accessibility.
The City of Joondalup has installed shade sails at Pinnaroo Point Beach Park in Hillarys as part of a $50,000 upgrade. Further improvements to the park area are expected to be completed in the coming months.
The City of Canning is also expected to soon finish $100,000 in improvements at Canning Vale Oval Playground. The upgrade will include accessible play equipment designed to suit children across a wide range of ages.
The playground funding forms part of the Cook Labor Government’s broader election commitment to support local government and community projects, including new playgrounds, parks and community facilities that promote active participation and more inclusive neighborhoods.
