The family of Perth man Cameron Hughes is seeking answers after he died in a Bali immigration detention centre while awaiting deportation for an alleged breach of visa conditions. Reports identify Hughes as a 39-year-old Australian man who had been living in Jimbaran and was being held after overstaying his visa by 98 days.

According to a spokesperson for the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, officers monitoring CCTV noticed Hughes appeared motionless in his detention room on Friday night. Staff then responded, gave first aid and arranged an ambulance to Bali Jimbaran General Hospital, but he was pronounced dead while en route.

Preliminary medical assessments cited in reporting indicate a suspected heart attack as a contributing factor. Indonesian National Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

The case comes amid broader scrutiny of Bali’s immigration enforcement, which has stepped up warnings and crackdowns on visa breaches in recent months. For Hughes’s family, though, the focus is much more immediate: how a routine detention ended with the death of an Australian man far from home.
