PEOPLE & COMMUNITY

EE Hambley in Queens Park is celebrating 80 years serving the Canning community, with the family-owned business now across four generations and still operating as a Supa IGA, Australia Post outlet and Lotterywest kiosk. The store is WA’s second-longest serving Lotterywest retailer and one of only 12 stores in the state to have sold Lotterywest games for more than 50 years.
Margaret Hambley said the biggest shift she has seen has been the change in games and the technology used to sell them, moving from old Hugin ticket machines to modern terminals. She also said she enjoys playing the games herself, naming Powerpik for Powerball and a System 7 ticket for Saturday Lotto as favourites.
Lotterywest chief executive officer Colin Smith said the retailer’s survival over eight decades reflects resilience, innovation, adaptability, loyalty, integrity, family values and community connection. He said those qualities mirror what Lotterywest aims to embody and that partnerships with long-standing retailers help the organization give back to the WA community.
The company also pointed to how much the industry has changed since EE Hambley opened in 1946, including the shift from manual draws to computerized random number generation, plus the arrival of syndicates, jackpotting games and Set for Life. Lotterywest said it has distributed billions back to the community through prizes and grants, supported by retailers across the state.
