A Sydney mother has died after a backyard barbecue accident left her severely burned in front of her two children, according to local reporting. Charlotte Rose-Ann Hill was preparing a family BBQ so the children could roast marshmallows during the school holidays when she was suddenly engulfed in flames.
The children, aged 11 and seven, watched in horror as their mother screamed for help. Her son tried to smother the flames with his jacket while her younger daughter shouted for their father, who was inside getting ready for work.
Their father rushed to her side and gave first aid before paramedics arrived. Hill suffered severe burns to her face and hands and was taken to hospital for emergency treatment.
Family members said they initially believed she was improving after surgery and had hoped she would recover. But hours later, they received the devastating news that she had been found unresponsive in hospital and had died from her injuries.
A relative, Bianca Hill, said the family had been trying to create special memories for the children when the accident happened. The family has since launched a fundraising appeal to help cover funeral costs and support the children.
The case has drawn widespread sympathy as relatives and friends remember Hill as a loving mother. The children’s attempts to save her, and the moment they witnessed the blaze, have added to the trauma surrounding the tragedy.
