Tiny primate makes a big impression at Perth Zoo as new pygmy marmoset settles in
Perth Zoo has welcomed Warrick, a 150g pygmy marmoset, who is bonding with Jo in a new primate pairing at the zoo’s Primate Trail.
EVENTS & WHAT’S ON

Perth Zoo has added a new attraction to its Primate Trail with the arrival of Warrick, a two-year-old pygmy marmoset who weighs just 150g and is already drawing attention for his gentle temperament. He has joined Jo, a young female pygmy marmoset born in 2024 through the zoo’s regionally coordinated breeding program, as the pair begins to settle into life together.
The zoo describes Warrick as one of the world’s smallest primates, but staff say his personality has made a much larger impression than his size suggests. The official species profile notes that pygmy marmosets are so small they can fit in a human palm, and that they are among the smallest primates in the world.
Pygmy marmosets are native to South America and have specialised feeding habits, including gouging holes in tree bark to collect gum, as well as eating nectar, fruit, grubs and spiders. Their survival in the wild is threatened by rainforest loss, logging, land clearing for agriculture and the illegal pet trade.
Perth Zoo’s latest arrival also reflects the zoo’s broader breeding and conservation work, with Jo having been born in 2024 as part of a regionally coordinated program. Visitors can now see the pair daily from 9am to 5pm along the Primate Trail.
