While national attention has focused on the failed referendum and state discussions around a “Voice 2.0,” few are aware that Western Australia already has an Indigenous advisory mechanism in place — a body intended to guide government policy on Aboriginal affairs. Yet, despite its existence, the effectiveness and reach of this voice remain points of contention among community leaders, policymakers, and advocates.

Established to strengthen consultation between the state government and Aboriginal communities, the advisory group was designed to offer insights on key issues such as heritage protection, housing, education, and justice reform. However, critics argue that the body lacks transparency, independence, and tangible influence over decisions that directly affect Indigenous people across WA.

Supporters maintain that the framework represents an important foundation — one that, if properly resourced and empowered, could deliver meaningful engagement and progress. But for many observers, its low public profile and limited authority raise questions about whether it fulfills the promise of genuine representation or merely serves as symbolic inclusion.

As the debate over Voice 2.0 intensifies, Western Australia’s little-known advisory body stands as both a reminder and a warning — that structures alone are not enough without trust, accountability, and impact.
