Western Australians are racing to claim the state’s $100 Fuel Support Payment, with the number of applications reaching almost half a million soon after the scheme opened. The one-off payment is available to eligible WA driver’s licence holders and forms part of the Cook Labor Government’s more than $1 billion cost-of-living package in the 2026-27 State Budget.
The WA government says about 2.3 million people are eligible, including holders of learner, provisional and extraordinary licences. The fastest way to apply is through the ServiceWA app, while manual and paper claim options are also available for people who cannot or do not want to use the app.
Deputy Premier and Treasurer Rita Saffioti said the payment was designed to provide direct relief to households feeling pressure from higher fuel prices and broader living costs. In the budget speech, she described the measure as an Australian-first and said the state was delivering more than $1 billion in cost-of-living support this year.
The payment has also been framed as part of a wider push to ease family expenses, with the budget including a third round of the WA Student Assistance Payment, school transport relief, energy bill support and housing measures. Saffioti said a family of four with two children in high school could be eligible for $700 through the student payment alone, while a broader package of concessions could lift support further.
Public reaction has been mixed, with supporters welcoming the cash injection and critics questioning whether the payment will meaningfully offset fuel costs or add to inflationary pressure. In a post-budget interview, Saffioti pushed back on criticism that the payment could worsen inflation, arguing the government was prioritising consumer confidence and targeted relief.
The government says claims can continue through the ServiceWA app, with alternative channels available for those who need them. It has also urged eligible residents to prepare in advance so the payment can be processed more quickly.
