Western Australia is pushing deeper into clean energy with a new project that will see a remote Goldfields town powered by up to 80 per cent renewable energy. The plan centres on a solar-and-battery microgrid designed to reduce diesel use while keeping electricity supply reliable for the small off-grid community.
According to the announcement, energy company Pacific Energy has signed a power purchase agreement with Horizon Power to deliver the system for Menzies in the state’s northern Goldfields. The project is expected to supply about 80 per cent of the town’s power demand by 2027, with diesel generation kept as backup when needed.
The solar array and battery storage will work together to provide most of the town’s electricity, marking a major step in the state’s wider transition to cleaner energy. The project also fits into the Cook Labor Government’s broader push to expand renewable generation and strengthen energy security in regional Western Australia.
The move comes as WA accelerates investment in generation, storage and transmission infrastructure. Recent state government energy announcements have highlighted large-scale battery projects, new wind farm agreements and transmission upgrades as part of a longer-term effort to modernize the electricity system and reduce emissions.
